Notes on Books 1/30/11

Metaphors We Live By
_ metaphor is for most people a device of the poetic imagination and the rhetorical flourish a matter of extraordinary rather than ordinary language.

-metaphor is pervasive in everyday life on the basis of linguistic evidence, we have found that most of our ordinary conceptual system is metaphorical in nature

-human though processes are largely metaphorical

Metaphor & Film
Do metaphors really exist in film?
-metaphors existing in films have  come from two quarters: from literary critics who consider that this: extension of metaphor would empty it all of precision.

- symbolism belongs to the sphere of things while metaphor belongs to the sphere of words

-it is hoped that this will provide insights into the workings of "film language" and indeed into the very process underlying metaphor generally.

Rhetorics of Fantasy

Immersive Fantasy = the implied reader, dependent on the protagonists absorption of sight and sounds is not required to accept his/her narrative

To distinguish them = tales are usually told in the 3rd person the listener is represented as if present at the telling of the tale

Portal Quest Fantasy
--position of reader = companion -audience, tied to the protagonist and dependent upon the protagonist for explanation and decoding

most familiar type = Lion, Witch and The Wardrobe
similar narrative strategies - transition and exploration

Can one have an internal quest that does not require the protagonist to move through a physical and internal landscape?
-there are very few p.q.f that are not succeeded by journeys
